I understand cats roll in the dirt and come out filthy, ours does for sure. The thing is they have to lick the soil off and undoing so get valuable vitamins and minerals not found in their diet. Just saying.
I believe cats are in need of minerals they don’t get from their food, so by rolling in the dirt then later cleaning themselves they get the minerals they need.

I think they do it because it feels good, scratches their backs, and relaxes them. We all know how good it feels to walk on the beach barefooted or play in the sand with our feet, and I think it is a similar feeling for them. I can always tell when my satiny black haired tuxedo cat has been in the dirt, because he looks like he has been to the salon to get streaks put in his hair!! lol Unfortunately, he comes straight in the house, covered in sand and jumps up on the bed for his afternoon nap!
