The silk came from the region of Attabiy in Baghdad. And in the 14th century the silk was called by the Middle French term, “atabis”, which soon became “tabis” and translated into the English word, “tabby.”

The worlds heaviest tabby cat weighted 46 pounds and 15.2 ounces. The name of this Aussie tabby cat was Himmy, and he was owned by Thomas Vyse (though you can never own a cat).

When Himmy died in 1986, the cat was 10 years old and had a waist of 33 inches. Himmy was added to the Guinness Book of World Records as the “fattest cat”.

After his death, the award was discontinued because of the fear of cat owners intentionally fatten up their cats so they could topple Himmy’s record.

    I had two tabby brothers….Most amazing cats living to 16 & 19 years. While they had regular names, we also called them Striple & Spottle….Their coats were just different enough as well as texture– one was sleek the other plush. WhIle both had the basic tabby personality as described here, one was the most lo ing, gentle & patient cat I have ever had….

    A brown mackerel tabby shorthair cat once strolled into our backyard and announced that she was staying. We’ve never used normal names for our cats (Kiwi, Weaver, Sniffles, Aunt Jane, etc). Since this one was among the most common cat color and pattern, she became JustaCat. Justi became best pals with our red tabby named Crusty – for the pizza crusts I fed him when he came to the patio and wouldn’t go away.

    She came to our back steps Sunday morning when we were going out. We thought she would be gone when we got back. However, later that afternoon she showed by when it was getting really cold. So she stayed the night. She played in the backyard with our daughter, then followed her back upstairs.

    My, then 6yr old daughter named our orange tabby kitten Simba because she reasoned that he resembled baby Simba from the Lion King.
    Also, I once had acquired a FEMALE orange tabby in N.B. Canada & she was very temperamental and not as friendly. She was named Alfadore by a friend of mine. Simba is WAY friendlier than Alfie was, by far. BUT apparently she was SUPER rare though.
