5 Superfoods That Are Good For Your Cat

cat superfoods

Superfood is a term to describe any nutritionally dense food that provides multiple benefits to the body. Eating a well-balanced and healthy diet is as important in cats as in humans. However, balancing the diet for cats is a bit more complicated than balancing the diet for humans. Cats are carnivores, and there are few things they can eat besides meat.

Fortunately, some super food items (used by humans) are also perfectly safe for our feline friends. These superfoods are just as beneficial to cats as it is to humans.

eggs

Eggs

We want to start our list of superfoods that are good for cats with eggs. Yes, eggs have a unique combination of fat (yolk), protein (egg white), vitamins, and minerals, making them highly nutritious, and cats can eat eggs.

Generally, a cat needs 11 amino acids to maintain a healthy and sturdy body, out of which ten are in eggs. In addition, eggs contain taurine (good for cardiac and ocular health), vitamins A, D, K, and minerals (iron, sodium, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, etc.).

You should only feed your cat cooked eggs (boiled, poached, baked, fried, or scrambled). Avoid raw eggs because raw eggs may transfer certain bacteria (E-coli, salmonella, etc.) that can cause digestive issues.

In addition, raw eggs also contain a protein, “Avidin” that hinders the absorption of vitamin B7 (biotin) from the intestines.

Blueberries

Blueberries are often referred to as a big package in small packing because, despite their small size, this berry contains a high concentration of fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. The level of antioxidants in blueberries is higher than in any other fruit.

Blueberries support cardiac health and gut flora, urinary tract health, improve immunity, and enhance digestion in humans and cats. In addition, it also helps improve muscle and joint damage in cats. Many quality-conscious cat feed brands add blueberries to their products to enhance quality and palatability.

Flaxseed

Flaxseeds are another superfood that has multidimensional benefits for humans and cats. In addition to a rich concentration of vitamins (B, E, etc.), minerals (copper, molybdenum, magnesium, etc.), and fiber, flaxseeds are also a great source of Omega-3 (an essential fatty acid).

Omega-3 fatty acids can improve cardiac and mental health, help reduce inflammation and kidney problems and keep the coat shiny and healthy. The best way to feed flaxseeds to your kitty is to grind them just before their mealtime and mix a small amount in their food.

Cranberries

Cranberries contain a lot of fiber, and many vitamins and minerals (like vitamins E, K, and C and manganese, copper, etc.), thus improving general health in cats and humans.

However, Cranberries are especially renowned for their ability to maintain urinary tract health and help recovery from urinary tract infections. This is because cranberries contain a compound, “proanthocyanidins,” that reduces the growth of many bacteria, specifically responsible for urinary tract infections. However, unlike Blueberries, cats may not like the taste or smell of Cranberries; you can use cat supplements or feed containing Cranberries.

Dandelion

You may be surprised that a weed you frequently see on your backyard lawn has fantastic health benefits for your feline friend. Yes, dandelion is no less than a superfood for cats.

Your cat will benefit from each part of the plant, root, leaves, and flower. Cats can eat whole dandelion leaves; however, you must grind the root and flower to feed your cat finely. In addition to other nutritional benefits, dandelion is an efficient liver detoxifier and can help your cat fight allergies.

Points To Remember

Despite excellent benefits, you must remember that none of the above superfoods is an alternative to regular cat feed (like meat, fish, or commercial dry food). In addition, you can only feed the foods mentioned above in raw form (except eggs) and a small amount.

According to experts, these superfoods should be at most 15% of a regular cat’s diet. Thank you for reading. We hope you learned something helpful today.

Cats are obligate carnivores. The only thing they should eat (and can digest) on this list are eggs. Stop pushing anything other than animal protein on cats!
